Armed militants storm Sverdlovsk Palace of Culture

On Wednesday, a group of armed militants from the People's Republic of Lugansk--a self-proclaimed state in eastern Ukraine--descended on the Sverdlovsk Palace of Culture after government authorities destroyed their training base.

Officials from both law and enforcement and regional government believe the gunmen attended a terrorist training camp, the name of which in Russian translates to "Ashes," that was situated near the Sverdlovsk border before it was destroyed by Russian air strikes, TSN reports.

The incident began at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, when Sverdlovsk citizens witnessed Ukrainian helicopters accompanied by three military trucks, five cars and two buses approach the Palace of Culture and began to open fire, according to Face News.

Members of the militia scaled the palace's walls and set up sniper rifles on the roof, causing a nearby school administering exams to close. The members of the militia were ultimately overtaken by nearly 200 members of the Russian military.
