Dancers arrive in Yekaterinburg for classical dance competition

Young dancers from across Russia arrived in Yekaterinburg on Wednesday to participate in the second International Youth Competition of Classical Dance at Yekaterinburg's Municipal Theater.

Open to dancers between the ages of 10 and 17, approximately 400 candidates sent application videos to the competition's organizing committee. Of those applicants, 250 dancers were selected to participate in a day-long workshop, reports.

Upon arrival at the theater, the finalists were greeted with welcoming remarks from Yekaterinburg Deputy Head of Social Policy Mikhail Matveev. Later, they were divided into three age categories.

Throughout the duration of the workshop, which was launched in 2010 and has since seen growing participation and a larger audience, dancers trained intensively in three categories: solo, small groups, including duets, trios and quartets, and ensemble, according to

The judged portion of the competition began Thursday and will last until Saturday. During this period, the finalists will demonstrate their skills in solo, small group and ensemble dancing for a panel of judges. Winners will be announced on Sunday afternoon at a ceremony on the set of the Municipal Theater's "Nutcracker."

On Monday, May 5, the finalists will be treated to a gala concert with stars of the famous Bolshoi Ballet at the Yekaterinburg Theatre of Opera and Ballet, wherein winners of the "Nutcracker" youth competition will dance alongside professionals during the performance, reports.
