Yekaterinburg to create two new reservoirs

Sverdlovsk Oblast regional officials have ordered the creation of two new reservoirs on area rivers to store water for drinking and for use in housing construction.

On Wednesday, Regional Government Chairman Denis Pasler assembled a team to undertake the preparatory work needed for the construction of the reservoirs. A feasibility study of the proposed reservoirs has already been completed by the Russian Scientific Research Institute of Water Resources, reports.

A hydraulic and geological study will be commissioned of the reservoir sites. The studies are expected to take until the end of this year, with officials estimating that the actual design of the reservoirs will not occur until 2014.

Currently, the only artificially-created water reservoir in the Sverdlovsk Oblast region was constructed in the 18th century on the Islet River. The region has no backup power supply. A proposal to create a reservoir in Yekaterinburg was approved during Soviet Times but was never constructed, according to
