World Cup to bring 1.5 million visitors to Russia

More than 1.5 million people are expected to attend the 2018 FIFA World Cup matches in Russia.

One million fans attended matches in Germany in 2006 and 1.4 million attended the event in South Africa in 2010, the Voice of Russia reports.

FIFA recently announced where the 64 games will be held. Eleven Russian cities will be involved, including Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Kazan, Volgogrod, Sochi, Krasnodar and Yekaterinburg.

This is the first time Russia will be hosting the tournament, in which 32 national teams, including Russia, will compete for the cup. Russia is the largest nation ever to host the World Cup, according to Voice of Russia.

Nine countries initially placed bids to host the games. That number was then narrowed down to four contenders - England, Russia, the Netherlands/Belgium and Spain/Portugal.
