Koltsovo Airport flying high five years into expansion

Koltsovo Airport recently said the $7 million expansion plan it implemented five years ago has been successful.

Koltosovo received more than $8 million in investments for the overhaul.

The regional plan added 45 new flight destinations for Sverdlovsk travelers, 25 of which came from direct investments from the airport, while 20 came from airline partners -- not direct subsidies.

The airport began to reinstate the route network it lost during the 1990s before it received federal subsidy benefits. Despite its deficiencies, for the past five years, the regional routes served 500,000 passengers. The airport experienced three times the traffic it was originally built for, expanding past the growth rate of Koltsovo.

Koltosovo's airport has recouped its investments and is turning a profit from operations, becoming the largest hub in the central region of Russia.

The airport plans to further expand its subsidized transportation from Yekaterinburg to Kazan, Barnaul, Volgograd, Tyumen, Nizhny Novgorod, Perm, Samara, and Rostov-on-Don.
