SARS levels decrease in the Sverdlovsk region

Levels of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) cases in the Sverdlovsk region this year are below the average incidence rates, government health officials said Monday.

There have been 14,377 SARS cases in the Sverdlovsk region so far in 2015. This is 1.3 times lower than the average long-term data shows.

Health professionals attribute these statistics to the number of people who received flu vaccines this year, which stands at 1,584,000 people. This figure amounts to 37 percent of the Sverdlovsk region’s population.

The Sverdlovsk government has approved an action plan for the region’s influenza and SARS protection.

As part of the plan, the Ministry of Health has been providing vaccines for the 2014-2015 flu season. The ministry will also handle the organization of diagnosing diseases, provide care for influenza, pneumonia and SARS patients, give medical professionals protective gear and create medical drugs for the regional reserve.

A permanent medical staff will manage the preparation of health care organizations, including providing the facilities with antibacterial drugs as well as protective gear.

There is also a stock of protective gear and medicine in the case of a disaster.
