UrFU, Elsevier sign strategic partnership agreement

Ural Federal University (UrFU) and Elsevier, a well-known scientific publisher, signed a strategic partnership agreement on Dec. 3.

Educational and publishing professionals expect the agreement will heighten public and student interest in the science field.

"We have long-standing relationships,” Gabriela Appleton, director of Elsevier Strategy, said. “Today we have consolidated their official documents, implying a six-year plan of action that can make (the) science university even more pronounced in the world."

Elsevier is the world’s leading publisher for medical, scientific and technical innovations. The global company collaborates with health and science experts to publish more than 2,000 journals and 20,000 books.

The agreement also creates new roles for researchers.

"Today, in many sciences, especially in the socio-economic and humanities, researchers are based not only on the ability of self-organization, but also on an international network of researchers in their area,” Daniel Sandler, vice-rector for Economics and Strategic Development, said. “Every scientist is interested to play a more prominent role in this network."

UrFU and Elsevier plan to work together to organize and host conferences with international science, management, publishing, innovation and scientometrics experts. The conferences will enhance the educational, industrial and scientific interests in the Sverdlovsk region.

UrFU will also develop training and demonstration programs for Elsevier.

“The university implemented a roadmap to improve global competitiveness through 2020," Sandler said. "We have taken another important step in this direction by signing an agreement with Elsevier.”
