The government of the Sverdlovsk region recently announced that the area had performed its first successful knee arthroplasty surgery at one of its local hospitals.
The patient was 18 years old. There were tumors growing on the patient’s femur bone. Removing the tumors required doctors to perform knee arthroplasty.
Knee arthroplasty patients are typically recommended to either undergo amputation or to go to Moscow or foreign medical centers for treatments.
The surgery was successful. So far the patient has not experienced any complications from the surgery.
The surgery took place at the trauma and orthopedic department at GBUZ CO SACD Hospital for War Veterans.
The operation cost approximately $11,000 in U.S. dollars. It was financed by the leading specialists from the clinic in Moscow as well as the Ministry of Health of the Sverdlovsk region.
Surgeons in the region see this as an opportunity to begin performing similar surgeries in Sverdlovsk in the future.
