Russia and Vietnam discuss economic relations

Representatives from Russia's state corporation Rosatom and the closed administrative-territorial formations (CATF) administered by the Russian Federal Atomic Energy Agency recently visited Vietnam to discuss building nuclear power plants in the Southeast Asian nation.

Such an agreement would also mean increasing economic trade between Russia and Vietnam.

Officials from the CATF said such an agreement would benefit both Russian and Vietnam. If Russia provides Vietnam with greater energy resources, they said, then Vietnam will in turn be able to invest in Russia.

Vietnamese leaders have offered to help develop Russia's automotive, oil and gas, and pharmaceutical industries through the manufacture of switchgear, substations, oil and gas valves and other equipment. They say their country is growing, but that it requires greater energy production to continue expanding. They said if the countries do not build the power plants now, their potential for technological advancement will diminish.

Two cities in Vietnam -- the tourist area of Nha Trang and the industrial center of Dalat -- require greater energy resources immediately, according to the country's leaders.
