A DO-RA team, which is part of Skolkovo nuclear technologies resident JSC Intersoft Eurasia, has entered a radiation detector into Google's Project Ara, a contest to add components to future smartphones, the Skolkovo Foundation announced on Friday.
The team already developed an add-on dosimeter that is compatible with current phones. It can detect radiation within the immediate area and within food with an app.
It repurposed the device to act as a module for Google's new budget smartphone, which will allow consumers to mix and match different modules into each phone. The phone is expected to be released in 2015.
“The DO-RA team has decided to try its fate and take part in Google’s open international project, experience cooperation with international design teams, and ensure an additional stream of orders for its future products of its DO-RA.Modul line,” a company representative said.
Google will award $100,000 to the creators of the top module.
