UrFU students place third in Orienteering Championship contest

Students from the Ural Federal University (UrFU) took third place among 26 universities in the Orienteering Championship competition held last month in Smolensk, the university said Monday.

The sport tests navigational skills and involves a number of foot races of varying lengths. Multiple departments from UrFU were represented on the team, including Eugene Maskinsky, from the Physics and Technology Institute, who finished seventh in the sprint event, and Julia Fakhrutdinova, from the Institute of Public Administration and Entrepreneurship, who finished in fifth place.

Evgeny Popov, from the Institute of Materials Science and Metallurgy, took first in the long-distance event, while Fakhrutdinova took seventh.

The final event was the three-step relay, in which two teams from UrFU took third and fifth place. Third-place finishers were Tatiana Scherban and Elena Lukin from the Construction Institute, and Fakhrutdinova; the fifth-place team consisted of Daniel Akhtar, from the Institute of Radio Electronics and Information Technology; Popov and Maskinsky.
