Fire brigades compete in annual contest

The Gazprom Transgaz Yekaterinburg volunteer fire brigades held their 12th annual contest Oct. 22-24.

This year’s competition united competing teams of volunteer firefighters from differing branches of the company, including Sverdlovsk (Nevyansky Gas Mains Production Divison (LPUMG)), Kurgan (Shadrinskoe LPUMG), Chelyabinsk (Chelyabinsk LPUMG), Orenburg (Dombarovsky LPUMG), and LPUMG Krasnogorsk.

"Currently, there are volunteer fire brigades in virtually every branch. ... (These) people not only own the basics of firefighting, but each year, in practice, apply their knowledge and skills (and) provide effective assistance in the fire season, " Sergie Chmutov, industrial and fire safety company administration engineer, said.

The purpose of the competition is to determine the strengths and weaknesses of each team in order to train more accurately for future improvement. The tests pertain to theoretical knowledge and practical application of firefighting strategies. The participants are judged on both speed and skill.

Two of the obstacles were physical challenges. Competitors had to dress in firefighting clothing as quickly as possible before entering a fire relay. They then fitted a fire hydrant on a car before smothering a preset fire.

The second set of obstacles were intellectually challenging. The competitors provided first aid to an acting victim and took an exam on fire safety rules.

The winner of the competition was Chelyabinsk LPUMG. Second place went to Shadrinsky LPUMG. Close behind was LPMUG Krasnogorsk in third place. Officials gave trophies, certificates and prizes to the three winners.

After seeing how the teams performed during the competition, leaders intend to focus new training on uniting crews, increasing readiness, and improving skills with technical equipment.
