Of the 36 top Russian startup companies listed in the Nov. 6 edition of Trade Secret magazine, 16 were founded by Skolkovo residents.
The Skolkovo companies are primarily involved in the IT industry. They include: Oktogo, 2can, SDN-Video, Do-Ra, Floctory, RRT, IbuildAPP, Ivideon, Rocketbank, Surfingbird, Workle, Lingualeo, Ostrovok, Ubank, Angrycitizen and Metabar.
The magazine's editors picked the top startup enterprises based on three factors. The companies must have been started between 2010 and 2013; company investments must total at least $1 million; and the owners had to enter the contest by April 2014.
Residents of Skolkovo currently own approximately 1,000 startup businesses. The businesses are rooted in five main industries – IT, space, energy, biomedicine and nuclear technology.
In order to inspire independent thinking and business growth, the government offers Skolkovo entrepreneurs tax breaks and grants, as well as administrative support.
