Russian, Chinese universities sign construction agreements

An innovative construction agreement announced this week between Russian and Chinese universities will  strengthen international relations.

Viktor Vekselberg, president of the Skolkovo Foundation, announced that Tsinghua University Science Park in China will be building Skolkovo Foundation’s new research buildings. In turn, Skolkovo Technopark will assist Tsinghua University Science Park in other projects.

“A research center, laboratories and representative offices of Chinese companies that are interested in investment cooperation will be built at the [Skolkovo] Technopark,” Vekselberg said.

The Innovation Center at Skolkovo will provide housing and new research accommodations to many resident companies. It will include extra commodities for university, residential and entertainment purposes.

“I would like to underline the remarkable interest from the Chinese side in the Russian innovation sector,” Vekselberg said. “It’s linked with the fact that the Chinese recognize and respect Russian academic sciences despite the significant influence of European and American firms.”

Officials hope this cooperation will encourage growth in entrepreneurship.

The universities, based in Beijing and Moscow, agreed to these services at Moscow’s Open Innovations Forum, which took place last month. The event was meant to deepen the economic relationship between Russia and China.

Cybernaut, a Beijing-based investment fund, is considering future joint investment projects. The majority of the fund’s experience is based in robotics, space and superconductivity technology. The company is exploring the option of creating a new joint fund for the universities and even constructing a new Cybernaut branch at the Skolkovo Innovation Center.

“Private business in China is not disconnected from the development of innovation processes,” Vekselberg said. “The founders of this fund have unique experience in creating innovative products and launching them on the Chinese market.”

The document was signed by representatives from many institutions, including the Skolkovo Foundation, the Shaanxi government, the Russian Direct Investment Fund and the Russian-Chinese Investment Fund.
