Russian officials discuss need for better ties between universities, industrial sectors

President Vladimir Putin and rectors from Russian universities convened last week at Moscow University to discuss the future of higher education in the country and its relations to research institutions and employers.

Ural Federal University's rector, Victor Koksharov, moderated the "Universities in the New Economy" conference and spoke on the need for universities in the country to be in the global sphere of science and technology research.

On behalf of the other rectors, Koksharov urged the integration of Russian institutions of higher education with research institutes and the Russian Academy of Sciences.

While Putin agreed that this was a necessary step, he urged that the universities work closely with employers, specifically in the engineering and technology sectors.

"This is an absolutely fundamental requirement for universities that train specialists, primarily engineers and technicians. Today, in difficult economic conditions, we must rapidly develop the nonprimary sector for maximum convergence of education with production, with practice, with real life," Putin said.
