URFU consideres making physics mandatory

In a move to promote education in the scientific fields of chemistry and physics, Ural Federal University (URFU) and the Sverdlovsk regional government meet to discuss making physics a compulsory subject, the university announced Friday.

Heads of the regional governments agreed that the generation of interest would be a good move, but the students would have to do so voluntarily — it could not be forced upon them. This would require teachers and administrators to drum up interest through the enrichment of their respective science programs.

According to acting Rector Anatoly Matern, the task at hand is how to create interest in students without overwhelming them.

With the revival of the Ural School of Engineering, Gov. Yevgeny Kuyvasheva met with President Vladimir Putin and in that meeting he said Puutin approved of the revival.
