"Nevsky Express" bomber Tarkhan Kartoev dies in prison

Tarkhan Kartoev, the 41-year-old man sentenced for his involvement in the 2009 bombing of the Nevsky Express train, died in prison last week.

According to the Federal Service of Correctional Institutions in Yekaterinburg, Kartoev died of heart failure at a labor camp in Sverdlovsk Oblast, RFERL reports.

In May 2012, Kartoev and nine other men from Russia's volatile North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia were sentence to prison terms between seven years and life.

Among the charges, the group was found guilty of was organizing a terrorist group, premeditated murder, illegal weapons and explosives possession and use.

The bombing took place on a train in Russia's western Tver Oblast. The Nevsky Express runs between Moscow and St. Petersburg. Twenty-seven people were killed in the explosion, while 150 others were injured, RFERL reports.
