Russian State Professional, Pedagogical University to kick off march in honor of Spring, Labor Day

A trade union committee comprised of students and graduate students at the Russian State Professional and Pedagogical University have been invited to march in honor of the Spring and Labor holiday on Wednesday.

Students are invited to take part in a column march of Russian State Professional and Pedagogical University on Yekaterinburg's main street-Lenin Avenue.

The columns will be formed at 8:30 a.m. in front of the Square of Labor and will begin to move at 9:30 a.m.

May 1 was a symbol of class inequality in Russia for nearly 100 years. Between 1890 and 1917, workers held protests on May 1 to protest poor work conditions and advocate for higher wages. In 1918, the day became known as International Workers' Day in the Soviet Union but lost its socialist affiliation after the regime's collapse and was subsequently renamed Spring and Labor Day in 1992, according to TimeandDate.com.

In today's world, many Russians use the holiday to relax, often retreating to country homes, spending extra time in the garden or time with their families. Spring and Labor Day is a common barbeque and picnic holiday.

Last year, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree that extended the holiday from Wednesday through Sunday, May 5.

More than two million people are expected to take place in the holiday events this year.
