Sverdlovsk residents donate approximately $500,000 in gifts to area orphans

Seven thousand orphans and disadvantaged children in the Sverdlovsk region recently received nearly $500,000 in New Years gift donations from area citizens.

The gifts were collected and distributed through the Magic Fir-Tree charity organization, which placed specially-constructed fir trees in several Sverdlovsk cities with wish lists from poor children hanging from their branches. Those wishing to participate in the charity drive could take a child's letter from a branch and return with his or her most wanted gifts, according to Voice of Russia.

More than 90 percent of those who donated to the gift program were identified as having low or moderate income, Voice of Russia reports.
