Bird seen as final piece to UMMC Yekaterinburg

The addition of Sue Bird to UMMC Yekaterinburg is expected to be a key for the team to finally win the EuroLeague Women title.

UMMC has reached the last four Final Fours and each time came up against Bird in the semi-finals and lost, according to FIBAEurope.com.

Playing alongside Bird on UMMC is Anete Jekabsone, the 2007 FIBA Europe Women's Player of the Year, whose play has improved since the arrival of Bird. In her first game with Bird, a win at VICI Aistes, Jekabsone played 26 minutes and had 15 points, two assists and two rebounds.

Bird played alongside Jekabsone on the Sparta&K squad in the 2010 Final Four in Valencia, where they defeated UMMC.

In other basketball news, Rivas Ecopolis has signed Gema Garcia, one of coach Miguel Mendez's former players at Real Celta de Vigo, FIBAEurope.com reports.

Garcia joins Rivas from the Spanish Liga Femenina team Caja Rural Tintos de Toros, where she averaged 3.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists in just over 20 minutes per game.

At 7-5 in the EuroLeague Women, the team is fourth in Group C with the same record as third-place Good Angels Kosice and one victory clear of fifth-place Basket Lattes Montpellier Agglomeration.
