MGIMO participates in international language conference

Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) representatives attended the XV International Conference “Language discourse in social practice” at Tver State University on Friday and Saturday.

Attendees included teachers, linguists, practitioners, and representatives from 23 universities in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Germany.

The discussions at the conference addressed concerns in linguistics, foreign language teaching, communication studies and other higher education issues. The traditional approaches to these areas must be changed because of the results of new students about language discourse.

One of the issues that arose at the conference was a need for a clear definition of terms like discourse and discourse analysis.

A presentation by Head of MGIMO's Department of Pedagogy and Psychology and English Department Professor E. Voevoda titled “Language brokering: the need for new descriptors,” discussed developments and tests of new descriptors for languages. These new descriptors impact translation, interpretation, online communications, interpersonal discussions and a wide range of other linguistic concerns.
