Ural State University of Economics (USUE) recently hosted the Ural Federal District checker championships for men and the Urals Federal District championships for boys and girls.
Officials including Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Urals Federal District Igor Kholmanskikh; Minister for Physical Culture, Sports and Youth Policy of the Sverdlovsk region Leonid Rapoport Rector; Ekaterinburg's head administrator Alexander Yakob; and USUE's head of operations Mikhail Fedorov opened the ceremony with speeches that wished participants the best for an honest and fair competition.
As part of the opening ceremony, athletes from USUE’s climbing and aerobics teams demonstrated their skills.
After the ceremony, the checkers contestants who traveled from regions across Russia including Samara, Perm, Urals and Sakha (Yakutia) began their competition. Anton Sozinova, Russia’s grandmaster of checkers and a world champion in team competition, selected the drafts for the players.
Sawa Zaika -- the youngest world champion of checkers at 10 years old -- and Mary Arabtanovoy -- the checkers medalist of the Sverdlovsk region and the Urals Federal District -- tied for the championship in the youngest age group. They received eBooks and cakes that looked like checkerboards.
Other tournament participants with success in previous national and international competition included Sawa Zaika, Oleg Dashkov, Garayev Arthur, Anastasia Chekasin, Bragin Egor and Elena Hasipova.
