Kvadrotsiklitsty Sergey Karjakin, a graduate from Ural Federal University, recently participated in the Dakar Rally 2015.
Karjakin has already finished the first three stages of the race, giving the Urals team of riders the chance to be the next leaders in the competition. Karjakin specifically would be the leader of the race.
Karjakin participated in the race for the first time last year; he placed seventh out of 38 racers, which is a strong beginning for a first-time racer.
Karjakin started off in ninth place. Then he rose to seventh in the second stage. At the third level, he finished eleventh in the race. His final time was 3:21:48 – he was behind the first-place finisher by just 13:21.
The 13:21 time gap was reportedly due to the driver catching on a stone. Luckily Karjakin was able to make up for lost time.
At first, Karjakin was the only Russian to participate in the Dakar rally-marathon quad race in 2015. Now there is a second Russian athlete involved in the contest.
The temperatures have been sweltering, giving the racers another obstacle to overcome.
The race, which takes place in 12 cities throughout Argentina, Bolivia and Chile, ends Jan. 17.
