Sverdlovsk region approves import-substitution program

The Sverdlovsk regional government officially approved the import-substitution program for industrial and scientific industries on Tuesday.

The Cabinet instructed Eugene Kuyvashev, governor of the Sverdlovsk region, to create a program to substitute foreign merchandise with domestic alternatives.

The program is seen as one of the key factors in expanding the Sverdlovsk region’s economy and quality of life.

"The most important conditions for the growth of the industrial potential of the region -- creating the necessary basis for social development -- are the implementation of the program of import substitution, the revival of the Ural engineering school, and improving scientific and industrial cooperation in the real economy,” Governor Eugene Kuyvashev said. “In terms of foreign political and economic instability, the situation is not only a question of production -- it is the question of security in the region and the country as a whole.”

The Industry Ministry plans to help companies emerge into international, inter-regional and intra-regional markets.
