Yekaterinburg limited to group-stage World Cup matches

During a meeting of the organizing committee for the 2018 World Cup, Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said Yekaterinburg would only be able to hold matches at the group stage because of Central Stadium's limited capacity at 35,000 people.

It is one of about a dozen venues that will be hosting matches during the tournament.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup will take place June 14 to July 15 in 2018. The group stage of the FIFA World cup splits participants into groups of four. Teams within a group play each other, for a total of three matches per group, then the two teams that have the best record after each set of three matches move onto the tournament stage.

In the 2014 tournament that took place in Brazil this year, the Russian National Team was eliminated in the group stage, with two ties against South Korea and Algeria, and a loss to Belgium.
