Yekaterinburg ballet company prepares to tour Europe

Yekaterinburg’s ballet company from the Yekaterinburg Opera and Ballet Theater will tour Europe Dec. 25 to Jan. 12, 2015.

Elena Kabanova, the prima ballerina, will lead the artistic group of 40 people. They will visit Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein and Switzerland and perform 19 shows.

The ballet group’s repertoire includes pieces by Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker," "Sleeping Beauty" and "Swan Lake," among other selections, many with a fairy-tale theme.

Some of the shows are narrative-based. An experienced, professional actor will narrate the storyline of the ballets. The narrator will explain the basics of the dance forms as the ballerina acts out the story through dance moves.

These kinds of narrative shows are part of the German cultural tradition when performances are done for an audience consisting primarily of children.

Audience members should note that "Sleeping Beauty" is not ordinarily part of the Opera and Ballet Theater’s selection of performances. The dancers used the ballet to create their own unique routine, complete with scenery and costumes.
