Eugene Kuyvashev, governor of the Sverdlovsk region, called on local and regional authorities on Wednesday to work together to further develop economic and social growth in the area.
The main goal of the partnership is to improve residents’ quality of life and protect their interests, Kuyvashev said during a Yekaterinburg City Council meeting.
"...We should always find consolidated solutions of acute problems, so as not to jeopardize the interests of the Urals -- the inhabitants of Yekaterinburg and Sverdlovsk region," Kuyvashev said. "One of the most important tasks of our joint work should be sustained efforts to improve the local government system."
The Sverdlovsk region recently made headlines over the decision to reform its local self-governance. Such changes will require more participation from Yekaterinburg citizens, including constructive dialogue with city officials.
Officials have designated an additional $92 million to the local budget to ensure the independence of small communities. The local budget now amounts to more than $1 billion to improve conditions in Yekaterinburg.
