Representatives support reforming local Sverdlovsk government

The Public Chamber of Representatives agreed Tuesday that reforming Yekaterinburg’s self-government is the only way to involve more citizens in city management and participation.

Representatives had been divided on whether or not to adopt reforms. They eventually agreed that it is important to reform Yekaterinburg’s local government for the health of the community.

Deputy Chairman of the Public Chamber Sergey Meisel said he hopes that reforms will remedy local problems in Yekaterinburg.

Meisel said that the current self-governance structure of Yekaterinburg is inefficient. If every citizen went to his designated official with his problems, the official would not have the time or the resources to fix all of the dilemmas, Meisel said.

The Vozrozhdenie Institute of district deputies believes that empowering citizens with more responsibility will bring gains to Yekaterinburg rather than losses.

City officials believe that a more open discussion would result in positive changes.

The meeting was held at Nizhny Tagil and Kamensk-Ural.
