Yekaterinburg veterans want street renamed to honor war anniversary

Yekaterinburg veterans have asked that one of the city’s streets be renamed in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War victory on May 9, the Oblastnaya Gazeta said.

The City Council of Veterans made the proposal in the regional newspaper, which is the city administration’s press service in Yekaterinburg.

Other organizations have asked that streets in Yekaterinburg be renamed.

NGO and SMS activists previously requested that Sacco and Vanzetti streets be given new names. The activists argued that this must be done because the current namesakes are the revolutionary anarchists Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti. The two men were originally from Italy. They were later proclaimed guilty of robbing a shoe factory and murdering the cashier and two guards in the United States.

The Great Patriotic War veterans asked for other anniversary honors in the proposal, such as a memorial plaque for Leonid Padukovu, a man many consider to be the greatest Soviet Union hero.
