Concerns raised over Sverdlovsk's low vegetable output

Unlike the high production rates for milk and meat in the Sverdlovsk region, vegetables are lagging far behind.

At a recent meeting with the regional government, experts said the lack of vegetable production is due to a flawed system for obtaining and processing the vegetables. This part of the region's agricultural sector may completely disappear if the system is not fixed.

Michael Kopytova, minister of Food and Agribusiness, said improving vegetable production means overhauling agricultural processing and better serving consumers.

"Maybe it is time to think about creating logistics centers, particularly for crop production," Kopytova said.

Kopytova attributes the booming meat and dairy sectors to the  population supporting these agricultural goals in the community.

Officials will meet again in February 2015 to further address the concerns of the agricultural community and its vegetable production.
