12-year-old falls through ice

A 12-year-old girl from Yekaterinburg fell through an ice reservoir after she, her sister and some friends had left school for the day Thursday.

The Oblastnaya Gazeeta reported the girl did not notice the cracked ice, and before she had realized it was waist-deep in nearly freezing water. Her sister and friends were able to get her out of the ice and headed home.

Passers-by noticed the girl was in trouble and took her to the nearest hospital. There, they discovered she was showing the beginning signs of hypothermia. At last report, she was in stable condition.

The girl's grandmother, her legal guardian because her mother lost parental rights, was questioned and told of preventative measure she can take so this does not happen again.

Law enforcement urges parents and guardians to be vigilant and talk to their children about the dangers of playing on frozen bodies of water during autumn and winter months.
