The Moscow State Institute for International Relations' rector, Anitoliy Torkunov, was awarded the Lev Nikolayev Gold Medal award by the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts on Monday.
The award recognizes an individual's educational contributions and promotion of science and culture. Torkunov was honored alongside Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia; Leonid Roshal, director of the Emergency Children's Surgery and Traumatology Research Institute; and Roman Vilfand, director of Hydrometcenter.
On receiving the award, Torkunov said it was a great honor to receive this award honoring Nikolayev, whom Torkunov called a scholar and a wonderful person.
The award is named after the editor of multiple films, including "Institute of Man" and "Incredible." Nikolayev also was involved with the first video conference between the former USSR and the United States during the Cold War. The honor is sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Science and the Civilization TV company.
